Central heating leak detection in Sheffield

Central heating leak detection finds leaks in heating pipes and underfloor heating using tracer gas, thermal imaging and pressure testing. Falling boiler pressure, frequent radiator bleeding or a warm floor patch can indicate a leak. ADI Leak Detection Sheffield traces and marks it from the surface before any floor comes up, in one visit.

What are the signs of a central heating leak?

A central heating leak shows as boiler pressure that keeps dropping, radiators that need bleeding more often or a warm patch on the floor.

  • Boiler pressure dropping and needing the filling loop every week
  • A radiator or a run of underfloor heating that never quite warms up
  • Bleeding air out of radiators far more often than you used to
  • A warm patch on the floor, or a skirting board that has started to lift
  • Damp in a downstairs ceiling under a bathroom radiator

Where do central heating leaks occur in Sheffield?

Stone semis in Dore and Totley often have heating pipes buried in solid floors from a 1970s conversion, and a 1930s semi in Woodseats will have three generations of pipework under the same hallway. Both need the run mapped to find the central heating leak before anything is lifted.

How does ADI Leak Detection Sheffield find a central heating leak?

Central heating leak detection uses tracer gas, thermal imaging and pressure testing to locate a central heating leak.

1

Pressure test the central heating circuit

Pressure testing measures water loss from the heating circuit. The circuit is isolated before the test, and tracing starts once the rate of loss is known.

2

Map the heating pipes with thermal imaging

Thermal imaging reads the heat of the circuit through the floor finish and draws the layout of the pipework, including underfloor heating loops.

3

Introduce tracer gas into the heating circuit

Hydrogen tracer gas passes through the heating pipe leak and rises through screed, timber and tile. The system is drained before it is charged with tracer gas.

4

Detect escaping tracer gas above the heating pipes

A tracer gas probe detects the escape above the heating pipes as the engineer moves it across the floor, usually locating it within a few centimetres.

5

Confirm and mark the central heating leak

Moisture readings and a borescope inspection through a small access point confirm the heating leak position before anything is lifted.

For a heating leak, the first sign is usually a boiler losing pressure.

Why does a boiler keep losing pressure?

Boiler pressure loss usually indicates a hidden heating leak. A sealed system does not use water up, so a falling gauge means water is escaping; the investigation locates the source.

Why does boiler pressure drop?

A leak on the heating circuit is the common cause: a sealed system only loses water if it is escaping somewhere. A failed pressure relief valve or a waterlogged expansion vessel can do the same thing without a drop of water showing indoors, and the investigation is what tells you which of the three it is.

Why does topping up the boiler fail to fix a heating leak?

Every top up puts fresh, oxygenated water into a sealed system, which speeds up corrosion in the radiators and the boiler itself. Meanwhile the leak carries on under the floor, so a small repair now turns into a lifted floor and a damaged ceiling later.

How does ADI Leak Detection Sheffield investigate boiler pressure loss?

Tracer gas goes into the drained circuit, thermal imaging maps the pipe runs under the floor, and the system is pressure tested zone by zone until the loss is isolated. Once the leak is found, its position is marked before anything is lifted, and the report says plainly whether it was the pipework, the valve or the vessel.

What happens after a central heating leak is found?

Central heating leak repairs by ADI Leak Detection Sheffield are guaranteed. If a floor must come up, the engineer opens the smallest area that reaches the pipe.

Every leak detection visit ends with a written report by the engineer who attended, with photographs and video, formatted for trace and access and escape of water insurance claims.

  • Photographs and video in the written report

Trustpilot review: Top job, very impressed

The Trustpilot review rates Brett Steele’s work 5 out of 5.

I had a central heating leak that was driving me nuts. Two plumbers couldn't find and suggested I pull my LVT flooring up. I called ADI and am so glad I did. From my initial phone call and speaking to Caroline in the office to the final fix was efficient, pain free and effortless. Brett, the engineer arrived on time and set about with his array of instruments and tracked and confirmed the leak. Everything was explained and I witnessed four different instruments confirming his findings. Brett, was very friendly and professional. Taking care of my property and minimising the area of floor to be lifted. All in all, I'm throughly impressed with company and Brett's skills. I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Central Heating Leak

The Trustpilot review rates Brett Steele’s work 5 out of 5.

Brett kept us informed and updated as he worked through the house using different methods to locate the leak. After carefully and methodically identifying the location he used 3 alternative methods to verify that it was the location. Very thorough, tidy, knowledgeable and helpful. Would highly recommend.

Thorough, professional and tidy

The Trustpilot review rates Robert Gires’s work 5 out of 5.

Impressed. Our engineer, Robert, showed up on time and got started on finding the leak.

Our boiler had been losing pressure, and although we suspected a leak in the lounge, we needed confirmation (and we also needed to know there were no others). He found the leak, checked the rest of the house, dug into our concrete floors (with minimal mess) and replaced two lengths of copper pipe. He was thorough, professional, tidy and explained what he was doing throughout. He also made sure we saw exactly how and where the old pipes had failed. A good experience and glad to have it sorted.

How do you arrange central heating leak detection?

Your central heating leak enquiry reaches a technical advisor, who calls you back once you send the form with your postcode, confirms the service and arranges the visit.

Not sure this is the right investigation? Describe what you can see on the call and ask which one fits.

Tell us what is leaking

A technical advisor calls you back to discuss your leak and arrange the visit. Your details are only used for the purposes of your enquiry. Privacy policy.

What do people ask about central heating leak detection?

Questions about central heating leak detection cover three topics: the visit length, lifting floors and underfloor heating.

How long does a central heating leak detection visit take?

The technical advisor gives you the likely time for a central heating leak detection visit on the call, when the service is confirmed, because the duration depends on the property and the length of the pipework.

Will you need to lift my floor?

Floor lifting is needed only at the leak position, and only if you want it repaired. The leak is traced from the surface.

Can you find a leak on underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating leak detection uses thermal imaging to map the loops and tracer gas to pinpoint the failure. It is one of the most common heating jobs ADI Leak Detection Sheffield attends.
